Procedure for arranging a funeral

  1. What steps must be taken in the case of a death?

      • Contact your:

        • general practitioner;

        • minister; and/or

        • next of kin or friends for support; and

        • the nearest Solidarity office to report the death (NOT Solidarity Head Office).

      • Contact the undertaker. The nearest Doves branch must be contacted to collect the remains – inform them that it is a Solidarity funeral and provide them with the member’s Solidarity member number

If the services of another undertaker are used, Solidarity will pay out only R500 in respect of funeral expenses (subject to terms and conditions).

      • Ensure that you are in possession of a marriage certificate before the death is registered with the Department of Home Affairs.

  1. What Procedure is followed regarding the collection of the remains?

      • Doves will transport the deceased’s remains to the Doves premises

      • The remains will be tended to and kept at Dove’s premises until the funeral is held

      • If a Doves branch is not located nearby, the following arrangement will apply; Doves will transport the remains to and from the funeral and deceased’s next of kin will not be liable for the travelling expenses in respect of the first 80 kilometres (Refer to the Funeral Benefit 009.)

    • Certified copies of the ID documents and marriage certificate if the deceased and his or her spouse;

    • a paid-up policy booklet or certificate (where applicable); and

    • a Solidarity member number

    1. Information to member/next of kin upon reporting a funeral at the office.

        • A certified copy of the ID documents and the marriage certificate of the deceased and his or her spouse;

        • A certified copy of the ID document of the person who will be arranging the funeral (only in cases where permission is granted to have the cash benefit of a member without dependants paid over to the undertaker);

        • A certified birth certificate/ID document of the deceased child and the principal member;

        • The time and date of the funeral and the details of the cemetery;

        • The name and number of the minister who will be conducting the funeral;

        • A certified copy of the certificate of death (if it is available); and proof of Solidarity membership.
